Orinda is located in Contra Costa County and the first city east of the Caldecott Tunnel. Orinda started to blossom in the late 1930's when the Caldecott Tunnel first opened and now with a fourth bore that was finished in the winter of 2013. Some interesting info about Orinda. The 12.8 square miles that make-up Orinda were, in the days when Alta California was part of Mexico and part of four huge land grants. Each bore melodic Spanish names: Rancho Laguna de los Palos Colorados, Rancho Acalanes, Rancho El Sobrante and Boca de la Canada Del Pinole.

How did Orinda get it's name? Orinda was named after an Englishwoman. In 1876, County Sheriff and landowner William Walker Camron was married to Alice Mars Camron. Alice enjoyed the poetry of Katherine Fowler Philips, a 17th century English woman known as "The Matchless Orinda." In her honor, the Camrons named their home Orinda Park. Edward Ignacio de Laveaga established the town site as Orinda in the 1920's. He was the son of San Franciscan Miguel de Laveaga, who with his brother Jose, had purchased about 1,200 acres in the area in 1987. Having survived the 1906 earthquake and fire in San Francisco, it's no wonder de Laveaga preferred life in Orinda!

Orinda, Easy Access and Easy living. With local growth came local pride. In1941 came the new Orinda Theater and Orinda soon enjoyed a reputation as a liveley destination for dining, music and film.With the post-war baby boom and now with more families to serve, every sector continued to grow. The commercial district, the school districts and the housing market. Bart opened in 1973, accelerating residential and business growth throught Orinda and Contra Costa County.

Orinda incorporated in 1985 as a city. Orinda is one of the most beautiful cities in Contra Costa County. Orinda has been and remains today a family oriented community in an idyllic setting.

Orinda continues to make it's mark on the the region with a beautifully restored art deco Orinda Theater, a popular community center and Public Library. It's beauty, excellent schools, culture and it's proximity to San Francisco and all the Bay Area activities make Orinda a great place to live, visit or shop.
